What is morning sickness?

Morning sickness is a condition during pregnancy that causes nausea and vomiting. Some women have very mild symptoms, while others can become more sick. It’s usually most severe during the first trimester, but it isn’t always confined to that time.

When does morning sickness start?

Morning sickness usually begins around the sixth week of pregnancy. It’s often worse in the morning, but it can actually happen at any time, day or night.

When does morning sickness stop?

Most women will see their morning sickness symptoms resolve between weeks 16-20.[3] Some women can have it throughout the entire duration of their pregnancy, though.

How common is morning sickness?

Morning sickness is a very common condition during pregnancy. About 70% of pregnant women will experience some level of morning sickness.[1] Some women have it so severely that it progresses to a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum.

A pregnant woman with hyperemesis gravidarum may become dangerously dehydrated, or lose more than 5% of her body weight before pregnancy.[2] In severe morning sickness cases, and for women suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, treatment will often be necessary.

What causes morning sickness?

The causes of morning sickness aren’t fully understood, but a widely accepted theory is that increased hormones during the first trimester are a major factor.[1] Another potential cause of morning sickness is hypersensitivity to smells, which can happen during pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of morning sickness?

The symptoms of morning sickness are often consistent between different people. It usually involves nausea and vomiting that can be triggered by unpleasant smells, hunger, and increased saliva production caused by pregnancy. Some women can also experience morning sickness after eating certain foods that are spicy or sweet.

Can morning sickness lead to other problems?

Morning sickness doesn’t usually have any long-term effects. It’s uncomfortable and inconvenient, but doesn’t harm the pregnant mother or unborn fetus in most cases, unless it progresses to hyperemesis gravidarum.

When you have hyperemesis gravidarum, the accompanying dehydration and weight loss can affect the health of both you and your baby. In the most severe cases, it can lead to hospitalisation.

Morning Sickness

What medications are there for morning sickness?

Over-the-counter treatments for morning sickness include vitamin B-6 supplements (pyridoxine), ginger, and drugs such as doxylamine (Unisom).

But whilst many women can get relief from over-the-counter remedies, more severe symptoms might require prescription medications.

There’s a prescription medication for morning sickness called Diclegis, which is a slow-release tablet. It might be more convenient if you struggle with taking multiple pills a day.

Your doctor can also prescribe anti-nausea medications (antiemetics). If those don’t work, other options like antihistamines or anticholinergics might help. You and your doctor will figure out which medication works best for you.

Is there a ‘best’ treatment for morning sickness?

The best morning sickness treatment for you will depend on your needs. Your health history, symptoms, and personal preferences will help your doctor determine which medications might be safest for you and your baby.

Does morning sickness always need treatment?

Not always. Mild morning sickness symptoms might not require any intervention if they’re bearable, so you can choose whether or not you’d like to use any treatments based on your own comfort and needs.

Sometimes your symptoms can be avoided by making some simple lifestyle changes:

  • Avoid strong smells, flickering lights, and other things that trigger your nausea.
  • Take your prenatal vitamins with a snack. If your vitamin has iron, take it before bed if possible. Also, make sure to get some vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine). 
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Try smelling pleasant scents like lemon, orange, or mint to help with nausea.
  • Step outside for some fresh air or keep rooms fresh by opening windows or using a fan.
  • Don’t lie down right after eating.

Some studies have suggested that ginger has the potential to provide relief from morning sickness, but research is still quite limited.[1]

Does morning sickness treatment always work?

Answer:
Morning sickness treatments are effective, but results can vary. They can be highly effective for some women, but might not work as well for others.

Doxylamine/Pyridoxine has proven to be particularly effective for treating the symptoms of morning sickness. Doctors rated this medication as 78% effective, with nearly half of the women reporting that they hadn’t vomited in five days or more while taking it.[1]

Other nausea medications can also be effective. Combining these treatments with lifestyle changes and home remedies could increase relief from symptoms. Discuss the options with your doctor to determine which treatments could be best for you.

What foods help with morning sickness?

Answer:
Eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables is great for both you and your baby. Avoid processed foods and sugary snacks, which might make you feel worse.

Doctors often recommend these foods to help with morning sickness:

  • Simple, bland foods like crackers, toast, pretzels, or applesauce;

  • Plenty of water or tea (but watch out for too much caffeine);

  • Smoothies made with fruit and yogurt; and:

  • Hydrating fruits and vegetables, like watermelon, celery, or bell peppers, and citrus fruits that can ease nausea.

Is morning sickness treatment safe?

Answer:
Medications to treat the symptoms of morning sickness are generally safe. Some people might prefer a medication like Doxylamine/Pyridoxine, because it’s formulated specifically for pregnant women. Other medications are also safe, but are more frequently used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by something else, like motion sickness or chemotherapy.

Do you need a prescription for morning sickness treatments?

Answer:
While there are some OTC options available to treat morning sickness, like Unisom, most morning sickness treatments will require a prescription so that your doctor can monitor your condition. This is especially true for medications for pregnant women, because of the sensitive nature of pregnancy and the increased risk of health complications.
