Monistat is a vaginal cream containing an antifungal to help treat yeast infections. You can get it as a dual treatment containing a vaginal suppository or ovule (that come with an applicator as well or are prefilled into an applicator) with an external cream for itch relief.
A yeast infection (also known as vaginal thrush) is caused by the overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. This causes symptoms like itching, burning and abnormal vaginal discharge, but it can also be asymptomatic, meaning it doesn’t present any symptoms.[1]
You don’t always require treatment for a yeast infection, as it can resolve on its own. But if the symptoms persist, you’ll need topical or oral antifungal medication.
How does Monistat work?
Miconazole is an antifungal that reduces the fungi’s ability to produce ergosterol, a key part of the cell wall. Without it, the fungi weakens, making it easier for your immune system to clear the infection.[2]
What dose of Monistat are there?
There are three versions of Monistat available:
Monistat 1 is a one-day treatment containing one 1200mg ovule, a pre-filled applicator and a tube of external itch relief cream.
Monistat 3 is a three-day treatment containing three 4% suppositories, ovule or pre-filled applicator, and a tube of external itch relief cream.
Monistat 7 is a seven-day treatment containing seven applicators, a 2% vaginal cream, and a tube of external itch relief cream.
The suppository and ovule are inserted into your vagina to help clear the infection. You can also get each treatment with an external vaginal cream that’s used to relieve itching and irritation.
The dose you choose depends on the severity of your infection, as well as your health needs and preferences.

Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Should Monistat burn?
Answer:
Yeast infections can cause vaginal burning. This can worsen slightly when using Monistat, but it should be mild and tolerable. If the burning is severe, stop using Monistat and contact your doctor.
Can I use Monistat during my period?
Answer:
Yes, you can use Monistat during your period, and it shouldn't make it less effective. However, don’t use tampons, spermicides, or other vaginal products while using Monistat, as they can interfere with the medicine. It’s best to use fragrance-free period pads, and change them regularly.
Will I get side effects using Monistat?
Answer:
Like all medicine, there’s a chance of experiencing side effects when using Monistat, such as:Â
Mild burning
Itching
Mild irritation
Abdominal crampingÂ
The side effects should subside when you stop using Monistat and as your infection clears.Â
If you get severe vaginal burning, itching, irritation, swelling or hives, stop using Monistat and contact your doctor for medical advice.
Do I need to clean Monistat out of my body?
Answer:
No, Monistat dissolves once inserted, so you don't need to clean it out. Removing it will stop it working properly.
Can I use Monistat while pregnant?
Answer:
You can use Monistat 7 during your pregnancy as it contains a low dose of miconazole. It’s important to treat your infection as soon as possible, as delays could potentially affect your baby before or during birth.
Always consult your physician before using Monistat if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
