Lutera is a combined contraceptive pill. It contains two hormones: levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol. These are synthetic versions of the natural hormones your body produces. Together, they stop ovulation and make it harder for a fertilized egg to implant.
If you take it correctly, Lutera is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
How does Lutera work?
The hormones in Lutera stop your ovaries from releasing an egg each month. They also make the lining of your uterus thinner and your cervical mucus thicker, so sperm canโt move around easily or attach to anything, even if ovulation does happen.
Because of how it affects your cycle, you might notice your periods become lighter, shorter, or more regular. Some people also find that it helps with period pain or hormonal acne.
Does Lutera have a generic name?
The non-branded generic name for Lutera is levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol – the same as its active ingredients.
Lutera is one of several pills that contain the same doses of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol. Other branded forms include Aviane, Lessina, Sronyx, Vienva, and Falmina. They all work in the same way and have the same possible side effects.
The main differences will be the branding and the price. As they’re made by different manufacturers, the prices can differ.
Is there more than one dose of Lutera?
Lutera only comes in one strength, containing 100mcg of levonorgestrel and 20mcg of ethinyl estradiol, but if you need higher doses of these hormones, thereโs Levora. It contains the same ingredients but in slightly higher doses. Some people switch to it if Lutera isnโt managing symptoms like heavy periods or acne as well as theyโd like.

Lutera: FAQ
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you canโt find what youโre looking for.
How effective is Lutera?
Answer:
If you take it perfectly (at the same time every day without ever missing any) Lutera is more than 99% effective. But with typical use (missing a pill here and there), itโs closer to 91%.
If youโre ever more than 12 hours late taking a pill, it counts as a missed pill. Youโll need to follow the instructions in the leaflet. You'll likely need to take two pills in one day and use a condom for seven days.
Can I get Lutera through private health insurance?
Answer:
Most private healthcare plans in the USA do cover birth control like Lutera, but each plan can differ. Itโs best to check the plan youโre on to see if itโs covered.
Plans can also stipulate that you have to get your treatment from specific providers, so you should also check this, to make sure the provider youโre getting it from is included in your coverage.
Does Lutera help acne?
Answer:
It might. Some people find that combined birth control pills like Lutera help clear up hormonal acne.[1] But it doesn't work for everyone, and for a few people, the hormones can actually cause breakouts. If your skin reacts badly, there are other options the doctor can recommend.
Does Lutera cause weight gain?
Answer:
Not directly. Thereโs no proven link between birth control pills and long-term weight gain.[2] That said, hormones can sometimes affect your appetite, water retention (bloating), or how your body holds on to fat. If you notice weight changes that concern you, talk to a doctor for advice.
Does Lutera have any other health benefits?
Answer:
Besides preventing pregnancy, Lutera can help regulate your cycle, make periods lighter or less painful, and reduce the risk of certain conditions like ovarian cysts. It can also improve hormonal acne and ease PMS symptoms for some people.
Can I take Lutera with food and alcohol?
Answer:
You can take Lutera with or without food. If you experience feelings of sickness or nausea, try taking the pill with a meal. Itโs generally safe to drink alcohol while taking Lutera, but you should keep your alcohol consumption within healthy limits.
Are Lutera and Vienva the same?
Answer:
Theyโre very similar. The hormones in both pills are the same, and the amounts of each are the same, so they work in a very similar way.
The choice might come down to price or which brand a pharmacy has in stock.
Is there more than one Lutera dosage?
Answer:
Yes. Levora is a slightly higher dose of the Lutera pill. Itโs recommended for women who tried Lutera but found it didnโt do enough to control menstrual symptoms, like acne or heavy periods.
The best thing to do is let the doctor youโre consulting with know what you want out of your pill. Plain and simple birth control? Lighter or more regular periods? Help controlling symptoms like vaginal dryness or swollen breasts? Weโll work with you to find a birth control method that meets your needs. And if you try it for a few months and arenโt feeling it, switching to a different pill is easy with a Treated subscription.
