What is Blisovi Fe?
Blisovi Fe is a combined birth control pill, containing both of the hormones used in birth control: progestin (synthetic progesterone) and estrogen. The “Fe” in the name means the inactive pills contain an iron supplement. If you have an iron deficiency, the amount of iron in Blisovi Fe isn’t enough to treat it — but it’s a great bonus during your period week, when your iron levels can drop.
The specific hormones in Blisovi Fe are norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol.
What are the Blisovi Fe dosages?
There are three different types of Blisovi Fe, which contain the following hormone doses in the active pills:
- Blisovi Fe 1/20: 1mg of norethindrone acetate and 20mcg (that’s micrograms) of ethinyl estradiol;
- Blisovi Fe 1.5/30: 1.5mg of norethindrone acetate and 30mcg of ethinyl estradiol; and:
- Blisovi 24 Fe: 1mg of norethindrone acetate and 20mcg of ethinyl estradiol.
Blisovi Fe 1/20 and Blisovi Fe 1.5/30 are both what’s called a 21-day pack of birth control: you take the active pills for 21 days, and then the inactive pills for 7 days. Blisovi 24 Fe, on the other hand, is a 24-pack, so you take the active pills for 24 days and then have just 4 days of inactive pills with the iron supplement.
How Blisovi Fe works
Hormonal birth control contains synthetic versions of hormones, which change how your body does certain things every month, keeping you safe from pregnancy.
Blisovi Fe will likely keep you from ovulating, which is when the ovary releases an egg. If there’s no egg, there’s no fertilization and definitely no pregnancy.
But because it won’t stop ovulation for everyone, the pill also makes the mucus in your cervix thicker, which blocks sperm from getting through. And it keeps the lining of your uterine wall thin instead of building over the month, which means that a fertilized egg won’t have a wall to attach to.
Practically, this means that you’ll experience a shorter, lighter period.
Is there a generic equivalent for Blisovi Fe?
Blisovi Fe is a generic version of the brand-name medication Loestrin Fe. Loestrin Fe has the same variants (1/20, 1.5/30 and 24) but is made by a different company, so it’ll look different and it’s possible that it will cost more.
There are other generics of Loestrin Fe which have the same ingredients in the same amounts. Other generics of Loestrin Fe include Aurovela Fe, Gildess Fe, Hailey Fe, Junel Fe, Microgestin Fe and Larin Fe.
What are the benefits of Blisovi Fe?
In addition to preventing pregnancy, it’s possible that Blisovi Fe will have other benefits for you. Many people find that birth control helps them with their acne. The hormones in it can regulate the amount of oil your body produces, keeping blemishes in check.
Blisovi Fe can also make your periods shorter and lighter, as well as making them more regular. And, of course, the inactive pills in Blisovi Fe contain an iron supplement for a little boost during your period week and reduce the risk of anemia.
