Vienva is a combined birth control pill that helps prevent pregnancy. It’s over 99% effective when used correctly.[1]
It comes in a pack of 28, containing 21 white active pills and 7 peach inactive pills. The peach placebo pills don’t contribute to your protection. While taking them, you’ll get a period-like bleed, called withdrawal bleeding.
Is Vienva a combined birth control pill?
Yes, Vienva is a combined birth control pill containing levonorgestrel, a synthetic progesterone, and ethinyl estradiol, a synthetic estrogen.
These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening the cervical mucus, which makes it hard for the sperm to cross, and thinning the uterine lining so an egg can’t implant.
Is there a generic version of Vienva?
Lutera and Aviane contain the same hormone in the same concentration. The main difference is the price, with Vienva being the most affordable, followed by Aviane, and then Lutera.
Will I get side effects using Vienva?
There’s a chance of experiencing side effects when using Vienva. Common side effects include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Stomach cramps
Bloating
Weight changes
Headache
Unlike other pills, Vienva is a low-dose pill, so you’re less likely to experience side effects.
What doses of Vienva are there?
Vienva comes in one dose containing 0.1mg of levonorgestrel and 0.02mg ethinyl estradiol.
Each pack contains 28 pills: 21 active pills and 7 inactive pills, which contain no hormones. This gives you a 7-day break where you’ll get your period. The placebo pills also make it easier to maintain a consistent routine.

How to take Vienva
You should take Vienva on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after starting your period.
To take Vienva:
Swallow each pill whole with some water.
Take it at the same time every day for best results.
Start by taking the white pills for 21 days, followed by 7 peach pills.
After the white tablets finish, start a new pack immediately, even if your bleeding hasn’t stopped.
Make sure to read the package insert before taking Vienva.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Vienva?
If you forget to take a white pill and it’s been more than 12 hours, your pregnancy protection may be lost. You’ll need to use an additional contraceptive method like a condom for the next 7 days.
If it’s been less than 12 hours, take the pill immediately. You should still have pregnancy protection.
If you forget to take a peach placebo pill, it shouldn’t affect your pregnancy protection.

Vienva: FAQ
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Will I lose weight on Vienva?
Answer:
Weight changes are common with hormonal birth control pills. Studies have shown there's no connection between birth control and weight fluctuations, but it’s hard to predict, as there can be multiple factors involved.[1]
Sometimes, hormonal changes can cause water and salt retention, which can lead to weight gain.
You’ll only find out how Vienva affects you after you start taking it.
How is Vienva different to other birth control pills?
Answer:
Vienva is a low-dose birth control pill. That means it contains a lower dose of the active hormones that prevent pregnancy. This doesn’t mean it’s any less effective, but you are less likely to experience side effects.
If you’ve had side effects from other birth control that uses higher concentrations of hormones (like Levora or Yasmin), Vienva might be a better option for you.
Is Vienva similar to any other birth control pills?
Answer:
Some other birth control pills contain the same hormones in the same levels as Vienva, such as Lutera and Aviane. They’re made by different manufacturers and have different packaging, but the active ingredients used are the same.
Other pills like Marlissa and Portia contain the same active ingredient, but at a higher dose. This might be suitable if you’re experiencing a heavy and painful period while on Vienva.
How effective is Vienva?
Answer:
Vienva is more than 99% effective when taken correctly. This number drops slightly, though, if you make a mistake like taking it later or missing a pill.
Do I need a prescription for Vienva?
Answer:
You need a prescription for Vienva so a doctor can make sure it’s safe for you to take. They’ll review your medical history to make sure it’s the right birth control for you. They might ask you some medical questions and do a general health check too.
