Junel Fe is a birth control pill that doubles as an iron supplement, so it helps with energy levels and immune function, plus a whole bunch of other benefits. Take it right, and you’ll make pregnancy highly unlikely.
We carry three types of Junel Fe, which vary in hormone dose and amount of active pills (those are the ones containing hormones). The doctor can help you decide which Junel Fe is right for you.
How does Junel Fe birth control work?
Junel Fe is a combination pill, meaning it contains two hormones: norethindrone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). These work like progesterone and estrogen in the body. They help to:
stop the ovary from releasing an egg (no egg = no fertilization)
keep the uterus lining thin (this is where an egg implants and a baby grows during pregnancy)
thicken cervical fluid (making it more difficult for sperm to swim through).
Stopping the uterus lining from getting too thick also helps to lighten periods for some women.
Is there more than one Junel Fe dosage?
Yes, there are three Junel Fe dosages:
Junel Fe 1.5/30: A higher dose that can help with menstrual symptoms.
Junel Fe 1/20: A lower dose for women who experience side effects on stronger doses.
Junel Fe 24: Similar to Junel Fe 1/20, but with three extra active hormone tablets (24 instead of 21).
Each of the Junel Fe dosages we offer are 28 tablet packs. The inactive or “spacer” pills in Junel Fe don’t contain hormones, but do carry iron.

How to take Junel Fe
Always read the package insert before taking any medical treatment. Take Junel Fe by mouth, with water. You need to take Junel Fe at the same time every day.
If you’re starting Junel Fe for the first time and not switching from another birth control, you can take your first pill:
On the first day of your period. You’ll be protected from pregnancy straight away.
On the Sunday after your period starts. Use backup contraception, like condoms, for the first seven days—unless your period starts on a Sunday and you begin Junel Fe on that day.

How effective is Junel Fe?
Answer:
When Junel Fe is taken perfectly, meaning no pills missed, it’s thought to be over 99% effective. Out of 100 women taking it over 12 months, this means that fewer than one will get pregnant.
Pregnancy rates rise for women who miss the occasional pill or take it at the wrong time, so it’s better to follow the instructions closely. The more pills you miss or forget, the lower your protection will be.
What to do if you miss a Junel Fe pill
Answer:
Missing pills can reduce your protection, so it’s important to avoid this as much as possible. But if you do miss one or more pills, here’s some advice on what to do:
If you miss one “active” pill, take it as soon as you remember. Then, at the normal time, take the next pill. This can mean taking two pills in one day. After this, return to one pill daily at the usual time.
If you miss two “active” pills in Week 1 or 2, take two pills daily for two days. After this, return to one pill daily at the usual time.
If you miss two “active” pills in Week 3 and you’re a Day One Starter, discard your current pill packet and start a new one. If you are a Sunday Starter, keep taking pills daily until Sunday. On Sunday, discard your pill packet and begin a new one.
If you miss three “active” pills in Weeks 1, 2 or 3 and you’re a Day One Starter, discard your current pill packet and begin a new one. If you’re a Sunday Starter, keep taking pills daily until Sunday. On Sunday, discard your pill packet and begin a new one.
If you miss two or more pills, your protection will become reduced. You must make use of an additional method of birth control, like condoms, for seven days following this. Speak with a doctor if you’re unsure.
Does Junel Fe cause weight gain?
Answer:
Changes in weight are reported as possible side effects of Junel Fe, which means that you can either gain or lose weight. But it’s not a guarantee. In a clinical study, only about 2% of people reported weight gain while using Junel Fe.[4]
Does Junel Fe need a prescription?
Answer:
At the moment, you can’t get Junel Fe over the counter. In the USA, Junel Fe is a prescription only medicine.[3] This means that anyone who wants to use it will need to have a consultation with a doctor (or other qualified prescribing healthcare professional) first, to make sure it’s safe for them.
Are there Junel Fe generics?
Answer:
Yes. Other pills that have the same amounts of hormones as Junel Fe are Microgestin Fe, Loestrin Fe, Gildess Fe, Larin Fe, Blisovi Fe, Aurovela Fe, Hailey Fe and Tarina Fe.
There are some differences between these pills. Mainly the price, what the pills look like, the packaging and who makes them. But the way they work in the body should be the same, from effectiveness right down to side effects.
Can you take Junel Fe for acne?
Answer:
The combined pill can help to keep acne under control. Junel Fe isn’t indicated for this and other pill options are better at controlling acne. If you’re looking for a pill that can help with acne, let the physician know during your consultation.[2]
What’s the difference between Junel Fe 24, 1/20 and 1.5/30?
Answer:
Junel Fe 24 and Junel Fe 1/20 contain the same level of hormones, and are a lower dose. But Junel Fe 24 contains 24 active tablets, while Junel Fe 1/20 has 21 active pills. These are more suited to women who are sensitive to higher hormone levels, or who tried the higher dose and got side effects.
Junel Fe 1.5/30 is a higher-dose alternative.
Will I get a period on Junel Fe?
Answer:
A lot of women who take Junel Fe find their periods are lighter or become more regular. You should have a withdrawal bleed around the time you’re taking the inactive pills.
There is a way you can take Junel Fe and get no period, but you’ll need to let the doctor know you’re interested in this during your consultation. This method involves skipping the inactive pills and taking your next pack after your active pill section is finished.
Does Junel Fe have other health benefits?
Answer:
Because birth control pills contain hormones, which have many different roles in the body, some can provide other health benefits aside from birth control.[1]
Junel Fe can be prescribed for the treatment of pimples and acne, but this is done at a doctor’s discretion. It may also be prescribed off-label for a number of other health conditions.
Can I take Junel Fe with food and alcohol?
Answer:
You can take Junel Fe with or without food. If you experience feelings of sickness or nausea, try taking it after a meal. However, it’s important to always take Junel Fe at exactly the same time daily.
Junel Fe isn’t thought to interact with alcohol.
Are Blisovi Fe and Junel Fe the same?
Answer:
They’re very similar. Blisovi Fe and Junel Fe both contain the same hormones in the same amounts, and they’re available in the same doses (1/20, 1.5/30 and 24).
What’s the difference between Junel Fe and Loestrin Fe?
Answer:
There’s very little difference between Loestrin Fe and Junel Fe. They are available in the same doses, and should work the same in the body. They’re both packaged by Teva in the US. The colours of the tablets and the packaging may be different, and Loestrin Fe is more expensive.
