Mupirocin is an antibiotic ointment that kills off the bacteria that can cause folliculitis. You’ll apply it to the infected area 2-3 times a day for no more than 10 days. It has the same active ingredient and works in the same way as the branded drugs Bactroban (which isn’t available in the US anymore) and Centany.

It’s an antibiotic ointment that you apply to your skin to fight off the bacteria that cause skin infections like folliculitis. Folliculitis is a skin condition where your hair follicles become inflamed and sometimes infected and filled with pus.
While minor cases of folliculitis can get better on their own, for persistent or more severe cases, Mupirocin can be a good treatment option.
Mupirocin works by interfering with the production of specific proteins that bacteria need to survive and reproduce. This causes the bacteria to die off without being able to reproduce, treating folliculitis and stopping it from spreading.[1]
Mupirocin ointment comes in one dosage, 2% w/w. This means 1 gram of ointment contains 20 mg of mupirocin.
Mupirocin is a generic medication named after its active ingredient: mupirocin calcium. It’s an antibiotic that’s been used to treat skin and soft tissue infections since 1997 in the US.1
