Xigduo tablets are a combined tablet that lowers your blood sugar. It’s designed for people with type two diabetes, to help you get your blood glucose under control.
As well as helping to get your blood sugar under control now, Xigduo can also help you lose weight and reduce your risk of future complications.
How do Xigduo tablets work?
Xigduo tablets have two active ingredients, dapagliflozin and metformin. Dapagliflozin is a type of medicine called an SGLT2 inhibitor. This means it blocks a protein called SGLT2 from working properly. This stops the kidneys from absorbing as much glucose, which lowers the amount in your blood.[1]
Metformin is one of a class of drugs called biguanides, which work by decreasing blood sugar production and stopping you from absorbing as much glucose from your food. Together, these drugs work together powerfully to lower blood sugar, helping you get your diabetes treatment on track.
What doses of Xigduo are there?
There are five sizes of Xigduo tablets:
2.5 mg dapagliflozin/1,000 mg metformin
5 mg dapagliflozin/500 mg metformin
5 mg dapagliflozin/1,000 mg metformin
10 mg dapagliflozin/500 mg metformin
10 mg dapagliflozin/1,000 mg metformin
The usual dose is one tablet a day, in the morning with food. The exact dose you take will depend on your symptoms. So if the first dose you try isn’t enough to control your diabetes, go back and talk to your clinician about your dose, or message us.

How to take Xigduo tablets
Always follow your doctor’s advice on how to take Xigduo tablets. We can give you personalised guidance and answer any questions you might have when you order from us.
It’s best to take Xigduo in the morning with breakfast to reduce stomach discomfort.
Try to take Xigduo at around the same time everyday.
Using alarms and keeping a schedule can help.
Take Xigduo with half a glass of water, so the tablets are easier to swallow.
Don’t crush or chew the tablets.
How long does it take Xigduo tablets to work?
Xigduo’s full results can take a while to show. Dapagliflozin starts to work on your glucose levels a couple of hours after you take it, while metformin can take a few days to lower your blood sugar.
So although Xigduo will have an effect pretty quickly, you won’t see the full extent right away. When you order with us, we’ll check in with you during treatment to see how Xigduo is working for you.
What should I do if I make a mistake while taking Xigduo?
If you take too much Xigduo, it can cause serious side effects. Get medical attention right away. If you forget to take Xigduo at your usual time, just take it when you remember.
If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and just keep taking it as normal. Never double up on your dose to make up for forgetting a tablet. Don’t stop taking Xigduo without talking to your doctor.

Xigduo: FAQ
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Are Xigduo tablets similar to any other treatment?
Answer:
Dapagliflozin and metformin are both available as treatments for diabetes on their own. They both come in generic or branded forms, so which kind you pick is really up to you.
There are also other combined treatments containing either dapagliflozin or metformin. Canagliflozin works very similarly to dapagliflozin and is available with metformin in a tablet form, called Invokamet.
How effective are Xigduo tablets?
Answer:
Both of the active ingredients in Xigduo work well at reducing your blood sugar alone, so together they have an even more powerful effect.
One study into the effect of dapagliflozin and metformin together compared the efficacy of the dapagliflozin to a wide range of other treatments, like DPP-4 inhibitors, TZDs and sulphonylureas. When used with metformin, dapagliflozin was similarly effective at controlling blood sugar as other treatments. It showed the same or better results for lower blood sugar, and better results for weight loss.[1] So Xigduo can help you control your blood sugar as well as making it easier to control your overall health.
There are things you can do to make Xigduo even more effective, like trying to keep up a healthy lifestyle. Losing weight and having regular health check ups are an important part of managing your type two diabetes. Getting regular exercise will also help keep you healthy and manage your diabetes.
Do I need a prescription for Xigduo tablets?
Answer:
Yes, you can only get Xigduo tablets with a prescription. Xigduo tablets are only designed for people with type two diabetes to take. Your diabetes treatment will also vary depending on your individual health needs.
When you talk to us about your health, we can help you figure out the right treatment plan. If Xigduo is right for you, our doctors can write you a prescription and have your treatment delivered straight to your home.
Can you drink alcohol while taking Xigduo?
Answer:
You should avoid drinking too much alcohol while you’re taking Xigduo tablets. Drinking alcohol while taking Xigduo raises your risk of ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition. It can also lower the effects of your medication.
Alcohol can also make managing your diabetes more difficult, as drinking too much affects your overall health. It can also increase your risk of hypoglycaemia. You should make sure to never drink too much in one sitting, or drink too often.
