What is Singulair?
Singulair is a tablet that helps relieve symptoms of sinusitis. It decreases inflammation in the airways, making it easier to breathe. It doesn’t treat the root cause of sinusitis, which is often bacterial, but it can alleviate the symptoms. If your sinusitis doesn’t improve within a week of using Singulair, you might need antibiotics.
How does Singulair work?
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist, which means it blocks the action of leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are chemicals that cause your airways, including your nasal passages and sinuses, to swell. So by blocking them, Singulair helps decrease inflammation, making it easier for you to breathe.[1]
Will I get side effects with Singulair?
Yes, there’s a chance you might get side effects when taking Singulair, but not everyone will get them. Some common ones include:
- Upper respiratory infections
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
Any side effects you do get should subside over time, but if they do persist or worsen, let your doctor know. For a full list of side effects, check the package leaflet that comes with your medication.
Is there a generic version of Singulair?
Yes, there’s a generic version of Singulair. Like most generic treatments, it simply goes by the name of its active ingredient (Montelukast). There’s not much difference between branded and generic medications, as they’re both made in similar ways and are equally effective.[2] The main differences are their price (generic medications tend to be cheaper) and appearance (branded medications tend to come in more eye-catching packaging and might be marketed on TV or print).
What doses of Singulair are there?
Singulair comes in a single dose of 10 mg, typically taken once a day.
