What is Ketoconazole?
Ketoconazole is an antifungal cream that helps treat fungal paronychia, a condition characterized by redness, tenderness, and swelling around the nail fold. In some cases, the nail can also appear discoloured, develop ridges, or even separate from the nail bed.
Paronychia can be caused by both bacterial and fungal infections, so your doctor will assess your symptoms to prescribe the most suitable treatment for you.
How does Ketoconazole work?
Ketoconazole is an antifungal that works by stopping the growth of ergosterol โ the primary component in the fungal cell wall. Without it, the cell wall becomes more permeable, which prevents growth and eventually clears the fungal infection.[1]
Will I get side effects using Ketoconazole?
Like all medicines, thereโs a risk of getting side effects when using Ketoconazole, but not everyone will experience them. Common side effects include itching and a burning sensation on the treated area, but in many cases these only last a short while. For the full list of side effects, check the package leaflet that comes with your medicine.
How long does Ketoconazole take to work?
Ketoconazole begins to work quickly, but it can take a few days before you notice visible improvements in your symptoms. If you have chronic paronychia, which is typically caused by fungus, it might take a few weeks for it to completely heal.[2] Additionally, if the infection has affected your nail, it will take a few months for the affected portion of nail to grow out and return to normal.
What doses of Ketoconazole are there?
Ketoconazole comes in a single dose of 2%. You typically apply it twice a day for up to six weeks.
