Desloratadine is an antihistamine used to treat allergies including hay fever and eczema.
It’s estimated that between 10% and 30% of the population worldwide have hay fever, so it’s very common.[1] It’s caused by a response to allergens such as pollen and pet hair. It produces cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy eyes and congestion. If it’s caused by pollen, it tends to be worse on windy days, particularly between March and September.
Eczema is a skin condition that causes skin to become dry, flaky and itchy. It can be a very painful condition and is often seen in children. Although it’s not clear what causes eczema, it’s quite commonly found alongside other allergies and produces a similar immune response to that seen in allergies. It’s also made worse by irritants such as soap powder, stress and extreme weather.
How does Desloratadine work?
Antihistamines block the effect of histamines and prevent them from causing the common symptoms of allergies such as hay fever.
Histamine is a natural chemical produced in the body. Its job is to protect the immune system from allergens. It’s used in cells that come into contact with the environment including those found in the eyes, throat, mouth, lungs and skin.
If your body detects a foreign substance that it sees as being a threat to the immune system, it triggers its cells to make histamine. This is useful and often happens without you knowing.
In some cases, the body overreacts to the foreign substance and triggers an extreme response from the body, and too much histamine is produced. This is what causes the symptoms of allergies. The histamines look for ways to clear the body of the allergen. They do this through releasing water from the eyes, mucus from the nose and causing the body to expel the foreign substance through sneezing.
In the case of eczema, the body considers the damaged skin cells to be a foreign substance and a threat to the immune system. The same response is triggered and histamine is produced to clear the body of the allergen.

Desloratadine: FAQ
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
How is Desloratadine different from other treatments for allergies?
Answer:
Unlike other antihistamines, Desloratadine is non-drowsy. This means that it can be taken during the day without having an impact on activities such as working and driving.
There are other non-drowsy antihistamines available including Loratadine. Desloratadine is more powerful than Loratadine and so offers more immediate, long-lasting and effective relief from the symptoms of hay fever and eczema.
Is Desloratadine similar to any other treatments?
Answer:
There are other non-drowsy antihistamines available. These include:
Cinnarizine
Diphenhydramine
Fexofenadine
Cetirizine
These treatments are all available without a prescription and are not as strong as Desloratadine.
Desloratadine is a generic medicine. You may have heard of Clarinex, which is a branded version of Desloratadine. Both medicines contain the same ingredients and work in the same way, but the generic version tends to be cheaper.
How effective is Desloratadine?
Answer:
Desloratadine is a very effective antihistamine. Analysis shows that over 80% of people who take it see a significant improvement in the symptoms of hayfever such as runny nose and congestion. [1]
Which version of Desloratadine should I use?
Answer:
Desloratadine tablets are only available in one dosage size, so taking them is really simple. You just take one tablet once a day.
Once you start taking Desloratadine you’ll be able to review its effectiveness with our doctor. And if it isn’t working the way that it should, we can explore other options with you.
Do I need a prescription for Desloratadine?
Answer:
Yes. You need to talk to a clinician about your symptoms and experiences before taking Desloratadine because it’s stronger than other over the counter options you may have taken before.
You also need to be monitored when taking Desloratadine. Our clinician will need to review your symptoms and discuss any side effects that you experience to ensure that it’s the right treatment for you.
Our experts continually monitor new findings in health and medicine, and we update our articles when new info becomes available.
