What is Anusol HC?
Anusol HC is a topical cream that helps treat haemorrhoids (also called piles), a condition characterised by lumps in and around your bottom. It’s usually caused by pressure around the bottom, resulting in swollen veins. Smaller piles can go away on their own, but if they’re big or very painful, they may need to be treated with medicine such as Anusol.
How does Anusol HC work?
Anusol HC contains 6 different active ingredients, each working differently:
- Hydrocortisone acetate is a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and itching.
- Zinc oxide forms a protective barrier over the affected area and has soothing properties.
- Bismuth subgallate has a mild protective effect and may help reduce odor.[1]
- Bismuth oxide has mild antiseptic and protective properties that help prevent infection.
- Balsam Peru promotes healing and has mild antiseptic properties.[2]
- Benzyl benzoate is an antiseptic and has anti-itch properties.
These ingredients work together to reduce swelling and itching.
Is there a generic version of Anusol HC?
No, there isn’t an exact copy of Anusol HC, but there are other treatments containing hydrocortisone, which is one of the main active substances in Anusol HC.
Can I get Anusol HC over-the-counter?
No, Anusol HC isn’t available over the counter; you can only get it with a prescription. This is so your doctor can check if it’s safe and suitable for you.
What forms of Anusol HC are there?
Anusol HC is available in various forms, including cream, ointment, and suppository. For internal piles, the Anusol suppository is generally considered the best option.
For external piles, the cream and ointment are more suitable. But Anusol HC includes an applicator that makes it suitable for internal piles as well.
