Oxyntomodulin
Definition:
Oxyntomodulin (OXM) is a naturally occurring hormone found in the gut. It’s structurally similar to two other gut hormones: GLP-1 and glucagon. [1]
GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating the release of insulin and slowing down gastric emptying. And glucagon causes your blood sugar levels to rise by releasing stored glucose.
OXM is thought to work by activating both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. This means it may have some of the same effects as GLP-1 and glucagon.
Researchers are currently investigating the potential of OXM as a treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Early studies suggest it may be effective at reducing weight and improving blood sugar control, but more research is needed to determine its long-term safety and efficacy. [1]
