Diabetes
Definition:
Diabetes is a condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. It occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) is too high. Glucose is your body’s main source of energy.
There are two main forms of diabetes:
- Type 1: an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin.
- Type 2: The most common type, where the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use it effectively.
If diabetes isn’t managed properly, it can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, or nerve damage.
