Purging

Definition:

In the context of eating disorders, purging refers to behaviours that aim to get rid of food that’s been eaten, typically to avoid weight gain.

These might involve self-induced vomiting, misusing laxatives or diuretics, or exercising excessively.

When you engage in purging behaviours regularly, you’re thought to have a purging disorder. It’s similar to bulimia, except it’s not normally preceded by episodes of binge eating. [1]

Purging is a dangerous behaviour that can have serious health consequences. If you’re concerned that you or someone you know may be struggling with purging or an eating disorder, reach out to a healthcare professional.
