Protein

Definition:

Proteins are often referred to as the building blocks of life. They are complex molecules that play a vital role in almost every bodily function. Proteins are made up of smaller units called amino acids, linked together in long chains, and the order in which they’re linked determines the protein’s unique shape and function. [1]

Here are some of the important functions of proteins in the body:

  • Building and repairing tissues
  • Making enzymes
  • Transporting substances
  • Providing structure and support
  • Maintaining fluid balance
  • Regulating hormones
  • Supporting the immune system

You can get protein from foods like meat and fish; eggs; dairy products; beans and legumes; nuts and seeds; soy products; whole grains.
