Overweight
Definition:
Overweight is a term used to describe more body fat than is considered healthy. It’s important to distinguish between overweight and obesity, though.
Someone is considered to have overweight if their body mass index (BMI) is between 25 and 30, whereas someone with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered to have obesity.
There are many causes of overweight and obesity, including:
- Eating unhealthily, such as a diet high in processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats
- Lack of physical activity
- Genetics
- Certain medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism
Having overweight can increase your risk of developing problems like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. [1]
