Ketosis
Definition:
Ketosis is, essentially, when your body is in ‘fat-burning mode.’ It’s the metabolic state where your body primarily burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates, usually when you drastically limit your carbohydrate intake.
That’s because, when you consume very few carbs, your body starts to deplete its glycogen (stored glucose). To compensate for this, your body starts to break down stored fat into fatty acids, which are converted by your liver into ketones, which become your new primary energy source.
It’s often achieved through the ‘keto diet,’ which is very low in carbs, moderate in protein, and high in healthy fats. Proponents of it claim that it can lead to weight loss, increased energy, and improved blood sugar control. But for many, it can cause fatigue, headache, irritability, constipation, and nutrient deficiencies. [1]
