Hypoglycaemia
Definition:
Hypoglycaemia is where your blood sugar (glucose) levels are too low. People with diabetes, especially those on insulin, are at higher risk. As are people on certain medications or with certain medical conditions like liver or kidney disease. Irregular eating or excessive exercise without proper fueling can also lead to hypoglycaemia.
Symptoms of hypoglycaemia can vary, but often include:
- Shakiness
- Sweating
- Dizziness
- Hunger
- Rapid heartbeat
- Blurred vision
- Confusion
- Irritability
- Fatigue
Severe hypoglycaemia can cause seizures, loss of consciousness, and even coma. [1]
To treat a ‘hypo,’ you’ll need to quickly raise blood sugar levels. This usually means having sugary foods or drinks like glucose tablets or gels, sugar-sweetened drinks, or honey or syrup.
