Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Definition:

Your basal metabolic rate (sometimes called resting metabolic rate) is the number of calories your body burns simply by performing essential life-sustaining functions, like producing heat, beating your heart and fueling your brain.

It makes up around 60-75% of the calories most people burn,[1] but it can be affected by a range of factors like age, sex, weight, height, dietary and exercise habits.
